The Last Samskara

A rare moment of solitude as a body is prepared for cremation on the banks of the Baghmati River. After cleansing in the holy river, the first flame will be lit inside the mouth to purify the soul for reincarnation. Antyesti is a Hindu ritual that marks the final Samskara, a rite of passage, for this life. Up to fifty cremations a day are performed at this holy site.
